BAL-40
BAL-40 is the second highest fire danger rating behind the BAL-FZ rating. It means that the property (or section of the property) is exposed to increasing risk of ember attack, ignition from debris and/or exposure to flames in the event of a bushfire.
Installing BAL-40 bushfire shutters is the only way to meet the BAL-40 standards with standard windows.
The other ratings are BAL-29, BAL-19, BAL-12.5 and BAL-Low. BAL-Low is the only rating that doesn’t have any specific construction requirements.

Improved Safety From Fire
In a bushfire, unprotected windows can crack and explode very quickly under the pressure of heat, flame and wind gusts.
Testing conducted by Comfort Shutters where we supplied and fitted the shutter at the CSIRO was successful in meeting the stringent standards for construction in BAL-FZ areas. During this testing the radiometer on the protected side of the shutter has an allowable limit of up to 15 kW / m2. Our Flame-Zone roller shutter averaged 3.6 kW / m2, more than surpassing the requirements of the test in this area. (For comparison, skin melts at 10 kW /m2). Along with BAL-FZ compliance, our flame-zone shutters provide all of the usual benefits of regular shutters such as protection from heat/cold, noise, privacy and improved security.
